Get ready for ARU College! Have you planned a budget?
So you're about to embark on your journey as a university student in Cambridge or Chelmsford. Have you thought about how you are going to budget? It’s important that you set a budget for life in the UK before you arrive. A budget will help you manage your money and prepare for any expenses.
Check out our finance tips and advice:
- Open a UK bank account: Having a local bank account can make it easier to manage your finances and avoid currency exchange fees. Many UK banks offer student accounts with favourable terms.
- Understand your tuition fee costs: Be aware of your tuition fees, visa costs, and any other mandatory expenses. Plan for these major expenses in advance.
- Recognise and budget for your accommodation costs: Housing is likely to be a significant part of your budget. Make sure you are aware of the costs and payment schedule for your accommodation. Factor in other accompanying household bills.
- Take advantage of student discounts: A lot of places will offer student discounts of around 10%. You can also sign up for a student discount card, such as an NUS card, that will give you access to a larger range of discounts. Always have your student ID and ask about discounts wherever you go.
- Consider part time work: You are legally able to work up to 20 hours per week on a student visa, so you may wish to consider part time work. ARU have a fantastic employability and careers team that can support and guide you with this.
- Cook at home: Always wanted to master your cooking skills? Now’s your chance. Save money by cooking at home and preparing meals in bulk. Planning your meals ahead not only saves time but also cuts costs. Some supermarkets are more affordable than others, ask around, shop around and search for the best deals for you.
