English language requirements

The language of instruction at ARU College is English. To attain entry into the undergraduate or postgraduate pathway, you must be able to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency. The English requirement for all ARU College courses is: IELTS overall score of 5.5 (with at least 5.5 in each of the four components). If you hold one of our accepted qualifications but have missed the entry requirements, then you may be suitable for our Pre-Sessional English courses.

We have provided a calculator to help establish the entry level for a student based on their current English Certificate. It asks for the title and date of the test and uses that information to show the available entry levels for UK study.

English Language Tests

ARU preferred tests are IELTS (Academic)TOEFL iBT and Pearson PTE (Academic), so we recommend you take one of these if possible.

We also recognise the following qualifications/tests:

With all of the above tests, we reserve the right to undertake additional English language verification at the CAS issuance stage (for Tier 4 students). English tests must have been taken within the past two years to be accepted.

There may be exceptions if you have previously completed a recognised academic qualification taught and assessed in English.

If you do not currently meet our English language requirements, there are number of ways that you can improve your English language skills before starting your degree.

English Language Proficiency Test

ARU’s English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) provides an excellent opportunity to provide evidence of your English level to apply to study at ARU College and ARU. The ELPT has been developed to evaluate your level of English for undergraduate or postgraduate study. It is accepted by the University as an alternative to IELTS as proof of your English level and meets the visa requirements for the UK Visa Immigration (UKVI).

English for University Studies Course

The EUS Course is for students who would like to improve their general and academic English. We would usually recommend a minimum of 10 weeks to improve your IELTS by 1.0. Please note this is just a minimum guide only and you may need to do a Pre-sessional after this programme if you intend to apply for an academic course at Anglia Ruskin.

Pre-sessional English Course

The pre-sessional course focuses on English Language, including grammar and vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation and academic skills, including presentation skills, reading and listening, writing and exam preparation. All classes will be taught in the context of academic study in a university environment.

The number of weeks you require is dependent on your current English results. Find out more.
