10 things to do in Chelmsford this summer

If you’re studying with us on our Chelmsford campus and are looking for things to give involved with this summer, then look no further! We’ve listed some of the things you can get involved with in the upcoming months on campus and in the city, from an abundance of festivals, to sporting activities and days out.

  1. Attend one of the many festivals in the city.

Chelmsford is well known for its festivals and Hylands Park was home of the renowned V Festival for many years, as well as hosting Creamfields festival earlier this year. In fact, the city hosts a large number of festivals throughout the summer and here are just some of the upcoming ones you may wish to attend:

  1. Go to Essex Pride

Essex Pride is back for 2022 and is taking place in Central Park Chelmsford on Saturday 25th June 2022. ARU are proud to be the headline sponsor of this event and it’s set to be a great day! This year is a big one as we also celebrate 50 years since the first UK pride march in London.

Book tickets and find out more about the acts and timings, here.

  1. Challenge your friends to a game of table tennis on campus

If you’re not looking to head to the city and instead want something to do on campus, then why not challenge your friends to a game or two of table tennis. Visit the ARU College office in the Queen’s building to borrow the bats and balls.

To make a day of it, why not set out a picnic in one of the many green areas on campus or visit café 92 for some refreshing drinks!

  1. Do some sustainable shopping with Chelmsford’s Preloved vintage kilo

Sustainable shopping is becoming incredibly popular, and we’re here for it! Save the planet and your pennies by heading to Chelmsford’s Preloved Vintage Kilo on Saturday 18th June. Find out more and book your place, here.

  1. Visit Oaklands Park, home of Chelmsford Museum and Essex Regiment Museum

If you fancy a day out exploring some of the local museums and parks, then head to Oaklands park where you will find both the Chelmsford Museum and Essex Regiment Museum, as well as various sports pitches, tennis courts, a rose garden, picnic areas, and The Hive café. Find out more.

  1. Ice skating at Riverside Leisure Centre

If you want to escape the summer heat, then head over to Riverside Leisure Centre where you can take part in public skate sessions or weekend club nights.  The leisure centre is around a 10-minute walk from campus, and you can find out more here.

  1. Explore Chelmsford’s green spaces

Though it is a city, Chelmsford is surrounded by greenspaces and there are plenty of parks close to the ARU campus which you can spend the day in. For example, why not head to Admirals Park Local Nature Reserve and Tower Gardens, which is a 20-minute walk from campus. Here you will find plenty of space for walking, cycling or sports such as bowls, cricket, or football. There is also an outdoor gym and formal gardens.

  1. Listen to some upcoming local musicians at Make Music Day

If you fancy something a bit different and want to lend your ear to some of the local music talent, then head to the high street between 12pm and 3pm on Tuesday 21st June if you can, where you will find a showcase of some up and coming local artists at Make Music Day.

  1. Attend one of the fantastic events at Chelmsford Racecourse

If you’re celebrating something special or just want a fancy day out then head to Chelmsford Racecourse, just slightly out of the city, for one of the many events being held this summer. This includes ladies’ days, evening racing, concerts, and tribute acts.

Visit the Chelmsford City Racecourse website to find out more!
